Mullion Cove Hotel

Mullion Cove Hotel interior design

Reflecting a memorable coastal location in unexpected ways and boosting the bottom line by increasing spend from guests, Hart Miller Design have worked with Mullion Cove Hotel since 2012 on a rolling expansion project.

The award-winning hotel initially approached us to redesign their Glenbervie Bar and bistro area in 2012. The challenge was to create a welcoming space that felt exclusive to guests, yet inclusive to non-residents. We enlivened the run-down space with a contemporary feel, while alluding to the history of the 1900 building.

Working closely with managing director Matt Grose, we drew on the building’s history to influence our designs. We gathered the stories and functional needs of the bar before drawing on the hotel’s Art Deco-era architectural details to bring a grounded heritage feel to the interior.

Overall, Mullion Cove has experienced a sharp rise in room bookings and press coverage as a result of our work. Most recently, we have helped expand their offering with self catered apartments and a new Spa facility

“Mullion Cove Hotel isn’t your typical Cornish hotel with wooden floors and pictures of mackerel everywhere,” says director Matt Grose. “It strikes a tone. People are always commenting on it.” More importantly, the redesign has had a positive impact on the bar’s bottom line, with increased spend from guests and non-residents alike. What’s more, the Harbourside apartments have enjoyed 100% capacity through the spring/summer season, with upkeep less than anticipated and strong occupancy in the the winter months.

Our boldest move was to place the bar centre-stage, creating an effective division and striking centrepiece to define the cocktail bar and bistro spaces. Layering rich turquoise and yellow hues with plush textures and angular details of the period, the bar is a nod to the building’s heyday, with a new story to tell for the future.

Our work continued into the hotel’s bedrooms where we raised the bar, refreshing several premier rooms to a level of luxury that matches the hotel’s level of service. Situated in a stunning location, Mullion wanted to bring the beauty of landscape inside – which we did with attention to detail. Bespoke headboards and rich textures complement the sea views and cosy, comfortable furniture allows the guest to truly relax, switching off from the outside world.
