Translating a brand built on its bold visual style into a series of distinctive spaces and experiences, Hart Miller Design have worked with Origin Coffee for almost a decade. We’ve conceived 6 shops to date starting with their first offering in the South West before expansion in to the London market. Each space unique and individual to it’s location but distinctly Origin in it’s nature.
A lot was riding on the opening of Origin’s first café space in Porthleven, Cornwall as they took their first step to retail coffee. As one of the UK’s leading speciality coffee roasters they had built their reputation with a strong graphic identity which, 15 years after their inception, evolves with each unique roast being given a unique illustration. As such our work has echoed this approach responding individually to the architecture and location of each project.
The original Porthleven site was established in 2014 at Harbour Head. Harnessing the elements with a view of Porthleven Harbour central to the space the interior reflects the exterior with a combination of tactile and robust materials including a concrete counter top and re-sawn timbers. This shop presents a small footprint with the back wall painted out in a deep grey to add depth to the space and act as the menu whilst impulse and ambient food is displayed on tiered counter top platters.
In 2018 our work with Origin brought us back to the South West as they took their first steps to expand into the eat-in dining market. The Warehouse is situated on Commercial Road, Penryn and takes inspiration from Australian café culture where great food accompanies great coffee.
As their first eat-in café, we created an interior space that is inviting, relaxed and enjoyable and boosts the experience of their food and coffee offering. The light and airy spaces works across split levels and true to our design approach features tactile materials with beautifully rounded finishes to touch points such as dining chairs and table edges alongside beautiful Dor and Tan ceramics.
In our work we strive to avoid a ‘cookie cutter’ approach and with Origin this approach is key to each individual design. Instead, we considered how each destination can feel unique to its building, audience, context and area, each different yet distinctly Origin.
